Annan urges North Korea to work with UN

Concerned over Korean Peninsula tensions, Annan urges Pyongyang to work with UN

Reacting to recent developments in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Secretary-General Kofi Annan today urged the country's Government to cooperate with the United Nations nuclear energy agency.

In a statement released by his spokesman, Mr. Annan expressed "concern over the increasing tensions" in the Korean Peninsula.

"He urges the Government of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to cooperate fully with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and not to undertake actions that could further complicate matters," the spokesman said.

The Secretary-General called on all parties concerned "to make every effort to resolve the situation in accordance with international norms."
