Annan welcomes Libya's assurances on weapons of mass destruction

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today hailed Libya's announcement that it will fulfill all obligations under regimes covering the non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. “He sees this as a positive step towards the strengthening of global efforts to prevent the spread and use of those weapons,” a spokesman for Mr. Annan said in a statement issued in New York.

The Secretary-General said he looked forward to Libya's cooperation with relevant UN bodies and others working in this domain.

Stressing that all countries must fully implement disarmament treaties, he encouraged intensified efforts towards stopping the spread of the most dangerous and deadly arms.
