Iran Earthquake: Emergency Response

Iran Earthquake: Emergency Response

The international aid agency Oxfam, is coordinating an immediate response to the humanitarian needs of people affected by the earthquake in Iran.

Oxfam New Zealand will contribute supporters' donations towards providing water and sanitation for the thousands of people affected in Iran.

Oxfam is also sending a water and sanitation engineer to the scene of the earthquake to complete a full assessment of the situation to provide the information needed to draw up a fuller emergency response if required.

Oxfam New Zealand executive director, Barry Coates says: "Oxfam is particularly concerned about the people who have lost their homes and their access to clean water and sanitation facilities. In these situations diseases like typhoid and cholera can spread rapidly."

Oxfam has had a presence in Iran for the last two years seeking to provide assistance to refugees living in border areas.

To make a donation to Oxfam New Zealand's Iran Earthquake Fund please call 0800 400 666.

Oxfam New Zealand is a member of the federation of Oxfam International.
