Budrus: Join Us For More Tree Planting Tomorrow

January 28, 2004

For Immediate Release

JOIN US FOR TREE-PLANTING IN BUDRUS

[Budrus, RAMALLAH] The villagers of Budrus invite you to join them at 2:30pm tomorrow, Thursday, January 29, 2004 as they plant more olive tree saplings on their land to replace the trees that the Israeli military has uprooted, for the path of the Apartheid Wall --what Israel calls the “Security Fence.”

Last week, Thursday, January 22, hundreds of people marched, saplings in hand and peacefully planted 50 of 500 trees donated to the village by Rabbis for Human Rights. For over a month, since Israel distributed notices to the villagers telling them of their land that was to be lost to the Wall, the villagers have been peacefully protesting and calling on the international community to intervene to stop the destruction of their land and the ghettoization of Budrus and surrounding villages.

Tomorrow, the villagers, along with International and Israeli friends will plant another 50 trees. The aims of the village’s actions are as follows:

- To take back the land illegally and unjustly bulldozed for the Wall;

- To call for the International Court of Justice in the Hague to rule against the Wall;

- To show the Israeli Occupation Forces that the village will not stop its peaceful resistance to such Apartheid-like policies, despite being shot, beaten and jailed.

Budrus and the neighboring villages of Nihilin, Qibbya, and Medea stand to lose 90% of their land to the Wall. The Wall is being built in a circle around these villages and there will only be one gate to let villagers in and out. In other villages where the land has been destroyed and the Wall completed, gates remain almost permanently closed. If the building of the Wall is allowed to proceed, the villagers fear a concentration camp – like future. Please join us in exposing and attempting to stop these inhuman plans of the Israeli military and government.

DATE: Thursday, January 29, 2004 TIME: 2:30pm PLACE: Budrus, Ramallah District (gathering will be in front of the local mosque)
