Cyprus: Security Council Pledge To Help All Sides
Cyprus: Annan Hails Security Council Pledge To Help All Parties
United Nations Secretary-General this evening welcomed the willingness of the Security Council to help all parties fully meet their commitments under the proposed comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem if that blueprint is approved in referendums next week.
Earlier today, the Council President, German Ambassador Gunter Pleuger, told reporters that if approval is granted on 24 April, Council members stood ready "to take further actions as provided for in the plan, including by establishing a new UN operation in support of its swift and full implementation by all parties."
Reacting to
this move, a spokesman for the Secretary-General welcomed
Ambassador Pleuger's statement, noting that Mr. Annan will
soon ask the Security Council to take decisions in
accordance with the settlement, including on a reconfigured
UN peacekeeping operation.
