Haitian Families Impoverished By Floods Need Two More Months Of Aid, UN Says

Some 5,000 Haitian families in the western Mapou district, at risk of further mudslides, urgently need food, clean water and other relief aid for the next two months, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said today.

More than two weeks after heavy rains caused sudden fatal flooding of dry river beds and mudslides in the Caribbean country, the western area remains inaccessible by road and relief supplies are still being sent in by helicopter, OCHA said.

During the June to November hurricane season, rains could cause more land erosion and some villages in the area are expected to be fully or partially evacuated, OCHA said.
