Oxfam New Zealand’s Borneo Bushwacka Challenge

Media Release
For Immediate Release –Monday 28 June 2004

‘Oxfam New Zealand’s Borneo Bushwacka Challenge’

Registration is now open for Oxfam New Zealand’s latest Charity Challenge, a 13-day, trekking adventure to raise funds for projects in South East Asia and the Pacific. The ‘Borneo Bushwacka Challenge’ will take adventurers through some of South East Asia’s most breath-taking regions between June 5th and 18th 2005. The event is open to anyone over 16 years who is prepared to accept the challenge, and is the opportunity to make life-long friends, explore a fascinating part of the world, and contribute to Oxfam’s ongoing efforts in the region.

Trekkers are expected to raise $5,500 to participate in the event and have until March 2005 to raise it. Half the amount raised will cover trip costs, while the remainder will go directly to Oxfam New Zealand’s projects in Asia and the Pacific. Oxfam will assist participants with their fundraising efforts.

Oxfam New Zealand also runs a Vietnam to Cambodia Cycle Challenge that has been a sell-out two years running.

Oxfam’s mission is to attack the root causes of poverty and injustice through projects that build life-skills and self-sufficiency. Recent projects include helping Pacific Island women to develop income-generating skills, improving food security and health amongst villagers in Cambodia, and providing clean water supplies to remote communities in East Timor.

Ends.

Additional Information:

1. Photographs from previous expeditions are available. Call the Oxfam office if you would like to use them.

2. Detailed trip itineraries and further information on Oxfam projects in the region are also available.

3. The trip is a partnership between Oxfam New Zealand and Intrepid Travel, a specialist adventure travel company.
