Secretary-General Condemns Killing Of Senior Tamil Leader

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today condemned the killing of a senior Tamil leader, urging the parties in Sri Lanka not to do anything that might upset the country's peace process.

E. Kaushalyan, a senior political leader of the LTTE Eastern Province Division, and several colleagues travelling with him were killed when their vehicle came under attack yesterday evening.

A statement issued by the Secretary-General's spokesman said Mr. Annan "urges all parties to exercise calm and restraint so as to avoid actions that could disrupt the ceasefire agreement of February 2002 or the long-term interest of peace in Sri Lanka."

The statement also extended Mr. Annan's condolences and deepest sympathies to the families of all the victims "of these callous killings."
