Egypt Exempts UN Peacekeeping Equipment From New Suez Canal Surcharge

Ships carrying military equipment for United Nations peacekeeping operations in regions as far apart as Haiti and Burundi can pass through the Suez Canal without paying a new Egyptian 25 per cent surcharge, a UN spokesman said today.

Egypt currently has uniformed personnel serving in UN peacekeeping operations in Western Sahara, Haiti, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Burundi, Sierra Lone, Kosovo, Liberia and Georgia.

"The UN welcomes Egypt's continuing support of UN peacekeeping efforts," spokesman Fred Eckhard
