UN War Reparations Body For Iraq Invasion Of Kuwait Completes Main Work

New York, Jun 30 2005

Completing 12 years of its work processing the claims of those who suffered damages during Iraq's 1990 invasion and occupation of Kuwait, the United Nations Compensation Commission (UNCC) today awarded nearly $367 to successful claimants, bring the total it has awarded to about $52.5 billion.

Following the conclusion of its claims-processing work, the Commission will continue, with a small secretariat staff, to facilitate payments of awards to claimants, and complete a number of residual tasks.

Since the appointment of the first panels in 1993, over 2.68 million claims, seeking approximately $354 billion in compensation, have been resolved by the various panels of Commissioners.

Approximately $19.2 billion dollars has been made available to successful claimants so far, with up to $200 million more to be available for distribution next month.
