Iraq: New Constitution must protect human rights
Amnesty International published today a memorandum outlining its human rights concerns with regard to the draft Iraqi Constitution. With this document, the organization is urging those responsible for drafting the country's new Constitution to ensure that fundamental international human rights principles and standards - including the unequivocal prohibition of discrimination on the basis of gender - are enshrined in the new Constitution.
On 6 August 2005, Amnesty International published a statement describing the current phase of the constitutional debate as a unique opportunity for Iraqis to adopt a human rights based constitution.
