Fiji send observers to 51st CPA Conference

Fiji parliamentarians to send additional observers to 51st CPA Conference

Fiji's parliamentarians are expected to attend the 51st Commonwealth Parliamentary Association(CPA) conference tomorrow at the Sheraton Denarau, Nadi.

The Fiji Parliament is entitled to three delegates and a secretary, but as host branch this year, the country has been allowed to send additional observers to attend the main plenary Conference.

Fiji's three voting delegates to this Conference are the honourable Minister for Education Ro Teimumu Kepa, the honourable Member for Labasa Open Poseci Bune and honourable Senator Ratu KiniviliameTaukeinikoro.

Ro Teimumu is also the President of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarian Steering Committee, which met yesterday at the Frangipani (04/09).

Over and above this, the Fiji Parliament has nominated 28 observers from both Houses representing both Government and the Opposition.

All lady Members of Parliament have been invited to attend the Business Meeting of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians Meeting scheduled for Thursday, 8th September.

The theme of this year's CPA Conference is Commonwealth Parliamentarians in Partnership for Global Development.

Members of Fiji's Legislature will have the opportunity to concentrate on how they can further the cause of development in Commonwealth countries through workshops devoted to some of the United Nations Millennium Development goals.

This will include the fight against extreme poverty and hunger, combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases and the promotion of gender equality and women in power.

Three workshops were being held last week, prior to the 51st CPA conference today.

They included the Roles of Governments and Opposition, Pacific Access to Information workshop and the Small Countries conference.
