UN Security Official Shot Dead In Southern Somalia

A United Nations security official in southern Somalia was shot dead by two men last night, prompting the relocation of 12 national and one international staff from the area.

Mohamuud Musse Gurage, a Somali national, was killed in Kismayo, in the Lower Juba Region of the Horn of Africa country, which has been without a functioning central government since the collapsed President Muhammad Siad Barre’s regime in 1991.

Mr. Gurage was returning to his home at approximately 7:30 p.m. yesterday evening when two men shot him. His family took him to the local hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Mr. Gurage, who has been the UN area field security coordinating assistant in Kismayo for two years, was 42 years old and married with two children.

The UN Resident Coordinator in Nairobi, neighbouring Kenya, strongly condemned the killing. The de facto authority in the region, the Juba Valley Alliance (JVA), is investigating the incident.
