Government Agrees To Give Oil for Food Inquiry More Time

The Attorney-General, Philip Ruddock, announced the Government has agreed to give the UN Oil for Food Inquiry an extra three months in which to complete its proceedings and deliver its report.

The Hon Terence Cole AO QC, who is conducting the Inquiry, wrote to Mr Ruddock requesting he be given until 30 June 2006 to deliver his report.

“The terms of reference have been amended in accordance with Mr Cole’s request that he be given until the end of June to deliver his report,” Mr Ruddock said.

A copy of the amendment will shortly be available at http://www.oilforfoodinquiry.gov.au/

Mr Ruddock also said that he had received a further letter from Mr Cole yesterday requesting an amendment to the terms of reference to avoid any uncertainty about their scope in relation to matters recently raised by AWB before Mr Cole.

“The Government is considering Mr Cole’s latest request and will continue to endeavour to address any concern he raises as expeditiously as possible,” he said.
