Caritas-Lebanon Assisting 75,000 People

BEIRUT, Lebanon, JULY 25, 2006 (Zenit.org).- The newest armed conflict in the Mideast has prompted the Catholic charity Caritas-Lebanon to enlarge its emergency operations and to offer assistance to 75,000 people.

In statements today, Father Louis Samaha, director of Caritas-Lebanon, referred to the difficulties his staffers are having because of "the attacks on means of communications" and "against the communications sector."

"In southern Lebanon, some 35,000 people of the villages of Bint Jbeil and Rmeich find themselves isolated and abandoned to their fate," said the priest.

All the delegations of Caritas-Lebanon continue to mobilize and have been joined by volunteer women and youths who are helping with the distribution of aid, including food, hygiene products and medicines.

These volunteer teams also give courses on hygiene in refugee centers, which have been invaded by fleas and lice. Caritas is installing showers and distributing specific hygiene products.

"We have also organized animation workshops in 12 centers, to make the situation more bearable for hundreds of children who have been trapped in this horror," said Father Samaha.

Mobile health care units have been converted into emergency clinics, he said, and they visit refugee centers offering medical care.
