Donations peak for Cure Kids Fiji

Good Sports Countdown for Accor Hotels ‘Race to Survive’
International support shown as donations peak for Cure Kids Fiji cause

October 24 2006: Accor’s ‘Race to Survive’ adventure race is yet to start, but the hotel and resort group is already celebrating, having crossed its original fundraising finish line by more than $20,000 to raise almost AYD $150,000 (NZ$170,000) for the Cure Kids Fiji charity.

With two more weeks to go before the ‘Race to Survive’ event kicks off, organisers anticipate even more money will be raised as donations continue to pour in from official sponsors and everyday supporters donating online from around the world at curekidsfiji.com.

Some 72 competitors from seven different countries (including Fiji) will compete in Fiji for the adventure event which will run over five days from November 6 to November 10.

After months of training and fundraising for the event 12 teams will battle it out around the Fiji Islands with participants pushed to their physical limits over a strenuous course that involves swimming, mountain biking, outrigging and running.

Accor’s Race to Survive spokesperson Paul Stevens says - “This is adventure tourism at its best and most charitable with overseas teams raising their entry fee via fundraising in their own country.”

“In addition to the generosity of supporters across Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, the event has also attracted more than $100, 000 in corporate sponsorships locally which is a great example of tourism and the community working together.

“Accor’s Race to Survive to Cure Kids” has been reliant on sponsorship partners and our supporters, not least of all our ‘Gold’ Sponsors including Rosie Holidays, Tappoo, Colonial, Vodafone, BlueGas, Mechanical Services/Daikin, UBFreight, Fijian Holdings and Air Pacific.”

The event has been put together by Accor’s four Fijian based general managers and their hotels - Mercure Hotel Nadi, the Mocambo Hotel, Vomo Island Resort managed by Sofitel and the Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa.

With the event scheduled to start and finish in scenic style at the Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa on Denarau Island, the resort has put its muscle and money where its mouth is to enlist teams of its own in the worthwhile charity event.

Accor Hotels & Resorts launched Cure Kids Fiji in April this year in partnership with New Zealand based Cure Kids and Rotary. While Cure Kids critical medical research into childhood diseases continues in New Zealand, the money raised by Race to Survive and all Accor fund raising initiatives in Fiji will fund basic, life-saving medicines, equipment and medical staff training via a visiting doctors programme.
