Annan Hails China's Commitment to Double Aid to Africa

New York, Nov 5 2006 8:00PM

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has hailed a commitment by China to double its aid to Africa by 2009.

"The Secretary-General believes that, as Africans demonstrate renewed resolve to address the challenges confronting their continent, they can benefit greatly from the experience of their friends in China, who have had such success in sustaining growth and reducing poverty," spokesman Marie Okabe said in a statement released on Saturday.

Beijing's announcement was made at the Third Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.

Noting that China and Africa "have always spoken with one voice for common aims of development and economic progress," Mr. Annan said the Summit offered an opportunity for the two to advance South-South cooperation.
