UNICEF Grants Award To Moldovan TV Programme On Sport In Child Development

New York, Nov 23 2006 4:00AM

A Moldovan television programme highlighting the importance of sports in children’s development, including teaching them about conflict resolution and equality, has won the 2006 International Children’s Day of Broadcasting Award, presented by the United Nations' children’s agency and the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

“Teleradio Moldova best embodied the spirit of the ICDB (International Children’s Day of Broadcasting) by incorporating youth voices in the programming and production process,” UN Children’s Fund’s (UNICEF) Chief of Internet, Broadcast and Image Section Stephen Cassidy said, referring to the broadcaster.

Teleradio Moldova’s “Let’s Play,” featured two hours of programming including a live talk show, video reports and in-studio games. The live talk show was moderated by young journalists, 15-year-old Daniela Babici and 23-year-old Dumitru Antoceanu. Teams of young journalists also pitted their wits and strength against adult journalists in quizzes.

“We were impressed by the high calibre of all the nominees’ programmes and proud to have such great work as part of our ICDB initiative,” added Mr. Cassidy. The International Children’s Day of Broadcasting was launched in 1991 to encourage broadcasters worldwide to raise awareness of children’s issues.

The reports captured sports at the “Friendship, Creativity and Sport” conference; competitions among children’s teams from residential institutions; sports training for children with disabilities; and young people who excel at gymnastics and chess.
