Representative to NZ shares party's Road Map

Zimbabwe's Opposition Party's Representative to New Zealand shares party's Road Map

Zimbabwe’s Main Opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change, has always been committed to a democratic resolution of the crisis the country to allow Zimbabweans to enjoy the fruits of the liberation struggle for Independence.

It was born in September 1999, the party has its roots in Zimbabwe's labour movement but is also broad based. MDC is backed by business, church, women's organisations, students, human rights and civic groups, the impoverished rural population and the urban poor.

The MDC was formed as a response to the general dissatisfaction and unrest among the working people of Zimbabwe who started to realize the hollowness of the country’s independence after the government failed to respond to the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions’ call for responsible stewardship over the nation's resources as promised during the war of liberation that brought about political independence.

While popular with the people, the party goal to bring about real independence to the people of Zimbabwe have been suppressed by the Mugabe regime which has shut out political space to all forces opposed to its skewed policies and practices.

While the party aims at a peaceful resolution of the crisis created by the regime’s bad governance, it has, with other democratic forces under the banner of the Save Zimbabwe Campaign, resolved to exert pressure to force the regime to the negotiation table in order to bring back sanity to the country. The regime, with its desire to cling on to power at all costs, has responded by arresting and brutally attacking members of the pro-democracy community, most of them belonging to the party.

In June 2006, the party prepared its roadmap to a peaceful resolution of the crisis which contained proposals that offer an opportunity for a return to sanity.

The MDC believes the only way to resolve Zimbabwe’s crisis is through people driven constitution which will enable free and fair elections under, and accordingly calls the international community to support the work of the pro-democracy groups in Zimbabwe by arguing for a democratic dispensation through the various platforms such as SADC, AU and the UN.
