Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Fried to Lead U.S. Delegation to the Extraordinary Conference of the States Parties on the CFE Treaty in Vienna June 12-15, 2007

Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Daniel Fried will lead the U.S. delegation to the Extraordinary Conference of the States Parties on the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE Treaty) in Vienna June 12-15.

The Russian Federation on May 28 requested the meeting. The CFE Treaty, signed in November 1990, provides for significant cuts in the conventional military arsenals of NATO and former Warsaw Pact states. Since the treaty entered into force in 1992, more than 60,000 battle tanks, armored combat vehicles, artillery, combat aircraft and attack helicopters have been taken out of service.
