PM Hails Indian Independence Anniversary

The Prime Minister has sent a message of congratulations on the 60th anniversary of India's independence from Britain.

Mr Brown and Foreign Secretary David Miliband conveyed their best wishes to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and praised the "strength of the UK-India" relationship. The PM said that the "hopes and values" of the two countries would remain closely aligned.

The Queen also sent a message of congratulations to Her Excellency The President of India Pratibha Devisingh Patil.

The Republic of India was created with the partition of British India into two separate states, the Dominion of India and East and West Pakistan, in 1947. East Pakistan later became the independent nation of Bangladesh.
