Major Storms Moving Inland

AccuWeather reports a southward shift in the jet stream will bring a series of storms southward into California over the next several days, with the strongest storm in the series arriving on Friday.

The Friday storm will be a major storm for the entire state, and watches and warnings are already in effect for many areas, including blizzard warnings for much of the Sierra and the mountains of Northern California. Lower elevation locations will have heavy rain, with the biggest threat of flooding in the Sierra foothills, the coastal range mountains, the south-facing beaches of Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties as well as the burn areas of Southern California. More than six inches of rain could fall in these locations.

The storm will be accompanied by very strong winds -- not only in the mountains where winds could gust to over 80 mph, but winds will also be strong in the lower elevations of Northern and Central California.

The strong winds will begin to develop on Thursday, further increasing from Thursday night into Friday. Winds could gust to over 60 mph even in the San Francisco Bay area and the Sacramento Valley. It will also be very windy along the Central Coast and in the San Joaquin Valley.

Additional storminess will move in over the weekend. While the weekend storms will not bring as much rain as the Friday storm for lower elevations, heavy snow will continue in the mountains. New snowfall will be measured by the foot in the Sierra, and some locations could receive six to eight feet of new snow by Monday morning.
