Media Statement On Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama's Visit To India

Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, Prime Minister has returned from a successful visit to India.

The primary purpose of his visit was to tour and inspect facilities at Batra Hospital in New Delhi, which now is the preferred provider of critical care services to patients from Republic of Fiji Military Forces, sent under the Military's insurance scheme for overseas treatment.

The visit also gave the Interim Government an opportunity to further strengthen the Fiji- India friendship and to realize the enormous benefits Fiji can derive from this association.

Commodore Bainimarama expressed his heartfelt thanks to the Government and people of India for their courtesy, warmth and hospitality, especially to Minister for External Affairs, Shri Pranab Mukherjee whom he had a meeting with.

He thanked the Minister for having a good understanding of the Fiji situation, its present challenges and India's approach that Fiji's domestic matters be left for the people of Fiji to resolve.

On behalf of the Government and people of Fiji, he also offered his deep gratitude to India for having offered a piece of land to build a Fiji Chancery in the hub of New Delhi.

He thanked the Indian Government for its willingness to assist Fiji in moving forward, particularly their support for initiatives in building a better Fiji and Fiji's return to parliamentary democracy.

During the visit, Commodore Bainimarama had the opportunity to visit the major Indian hospitals such as Apollo and Max.

He is very impressed with the developments in India, especially in the fields of medicine and related facilities, which he had a first hand look at.

He was also fortunate to visit Chennai hospital where a number of patients from Fiji are seeking treatment for cardiovascular and kidney diseases.

Commodore Bainimarama returned from his 7 days visit to India on Friday 22nd February .
