Chad: Situation Following Renewed Fighting In East

Press Statement
Gonzalo Gallegos, Director of Press Relations
Washington, DC
June 16, 2008

The Situation in Chad Following Renewed Fighting in the East

The United States condemns the renewed attacks being conducted by Chadian rebels since June 11, 2008.

We are deeply concerned by the serious threat that this recent surge in violence poses to stability in the region. We call for all rebel factions to cease violent operations and begin a peaceful dialogue with the Government of Chad.

We urge the Government of Chad to open lines of communication to facilitate this dialogue.

We fully support the United Nations Mission in the Central African Republic and Chad (MINURCAT) and the European Union Force (EUFOR Chad/CAR) deployed in Chad and the Central African Republic contribution to the protection of vulnerable civilian populations and facilitation of humanitarian assistance.

We call on all parties to guarantee the security and freedom of movement of MINURCAT and EUFOR personnel as well as humanitarian workers.
