ENZA and Turners & Growers donate apples to Chinese earthquake orphans

ENZA International and parent company Turners & Growers (T&G) have combined resources to donate a container of apples to orphans in the earthquake ravaged province of Sichuan, China. 

ENZA and T&G have strong relationships in the region.  Since 2006 ENZA has been working with Sun Rising Agriculture to develop a marketing programme for the red kiwifruit variety Hongyang which was bred in Chengdu (provincial capital of Sichuan) and is grown in the Dujiangyan area.

“The donation is being coordinated with our partners in the region to provide support for the local people.  We have built up strong business relationships in Sichuan and Dujiangyan in recent years and there are few people who remain untouched by this tragedy,” said T&G Managing Director Jeff Wesley.

T&G/ENZA personnel including T&G Chairman Tony Gibbs and Managing Director Jeff Wesley have visited the area, hosted by the Dujiangyan Mayor Mr Sen Lin, Vice Mayor Mrs Liao Xiaoping, the Dujiangyan Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party and senior government person in the region, Mr Liu Junlin.

In October 2007 ENZA was a participant in the KIWI.CHINA 2007 International Kiwifruit Festival in Dujiangyan hosted by the local government.  Jeff Wesley and Robert Balicki of Worldwide Fruit Limited (ENZA’s UK Marketing partner) were guest speakers.

“A good relationship has been established between ENZA and the local civic leaders and it seemed appropriate that we should look at how we could assist following the earthquake that devastated the region and in particular with orphaned children resulting from the heavy loss of life,” said Mr. Wesley.

ENZA shipping supplier Maersk has assisted with the costs of delivering the apples to Sichuan.
