United States Support for Troop Increase in DRC

United States Support for Troop Increase in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Taken Question)

Question: Do we support the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s proposal for additional UN troops to Congo? What is our reaction to the French-sponsored draft resolution being discussed in the United Nations Security Council today that would make good on this proposal?

Answer: The resolution put forward by the French in Security Council passed unanimously earlier today, authorizing the Secretary-General's request to augment the United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) by 2,785 military personnel, and by 300 police personnel.

The United States strongly supports MONUC and its mandate to protect civilians, and restore peace and security, especially in the eastern region.

We encourage member states to rapidly put forward troops and resources for this effort.
