Ban Deeply Saddened By Deadly Inter-Communal Clashes In Nigerian City

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has voiced his deep sadness at the inter-communal violence in the Nigerian city of Jos which has resulted in the loss of life, the displacement of people and the destruction of property over the past several days.

The deadly Christian-Muslim clashes have reportedly left several hundred people dead and several thousand displaced in the most populous country in Africa.

“The Secretary-General is encouraged by the Nigerian Government’s response to efforts to bring the situation under control and to restore normalcy,” Mr. Ban’s spokesperson said in a statement.

“He stresses the readiness of the United Nations to contribute to efforts to help those affected,” the statement added.

Mr. Ban also extended his sincere condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government and people of Nigeria as a whole.
