Update on Insurgent Attacks in Uruzgan

Defence has updated information on the attacks on the compounds of the Provincial Governor and a local security chief in Uruzgan Province on 28 July 2011.

Reporting at this time indicates that 18 people were killed including 12 children, 4 adult civilians and 2 Afghan National Police officers. Approximately 52 people, including 35 civilians, were wounded in the attacks. No Australian personnel were killed or wounded in the attacks.

There have been reports that two platoons of Australian soldiers were involved in the immediate response, however this is incorrect. A small number of specialist ADF personnel responded shortly after the incident to ensure there was no further danger from explosive devices.

They were subsequently supported by an ADF Force Protection platoon. All of these members returned to Multi-National Base - Tarin Kot (MNB-TK) before the end of the day.

During the evening of 28 July, an ADF security platoon was deployed into Tarin Kot to the Governor’s compound to relieve US personnel involved in providing security at the incident site. They remained in place overnight and were relieved in the early hours of 29 July (Afghan local time) by another security platoon.
