PCHR Expresses Regret for Gaza Supreme Court's Decision to Stop Elections of the Bar Association

The Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR) deeply regrets the Gaza Supreme Court's decision to stop holding the elections of the Palestinian Bas Association as scheduled on Saturday, 17 August 2013.  PCHR hopes that the Court will consider the petition filed against the decision immediately and within the legal time limits in order to ensure holding the elections of the Bar Association without delay.

The Bar Association was informed on Thursday afternoon, 15 August 2013, about the Gaza Supreme Court's decision to stop the elections of the Bar Association which was scheduled to be organized on Saturday, 17 August 2013.

The Court's decision was issued in response to a petition filed by two members of the general assembly of the Bar Association.  In a statement issued on Thursday, the Bar Association said that the Court issued this decision without the appellants having been authorized by the Bar Association to resort to the judiciary nor a session was scheduled to hear the respondent's position.  The statement added that the Court had already considered the subject of the petition, so it must have dismissed it in form.

PCHR regrets the Gaza Supreme Court's decision to stop holding the elections of the Palestinian Bas Association, and hopes that the Court will consider the petition filed against the decision without delay to allow organizing the elections of the Bar Association as soon as possible.
