We reaffirm support for jailed Palestinian Munther Amira
The Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers (ANZASW) wishes to reaffirm its support for our jailed Palestinian colleague, Munther Amira.
He was arrested on December 27th, 2017, after protesting the detention of children in the Occupied Palestinian Territories by the Israeli Defence Force; he has now been sentenced to six months in prison in addition to being fined and facing a suspended sentence of five years.
Amnesty International have said that Amira is a “prisoner of conscience” and called his sentencing a “blatant and appalling attempt to intimidate those who peacefully protest against Israel’s occupation.”
ANZASW stands in total solidarity with Mr Amira and condemns his imprisonment. The right to peaceful protest is inalienable and protected by article 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
As an organisation ANZASW stands with all social workers worldwide, including in Israel and Palestine, who campaign against social injustice and abuses of human rights.
