Commencing countdown (engines on) to Guy Fawkes 2016

Christchurch will remember a hero – just for one day – as the Treetech Guy Fawkes Fireworks Spectacular launches with a David Bowie theme at 9pm on Saturday 5 November.

To celebrate 20 years in business, Treetech is again sponsoring this popular event at is traditional New Brighton Pier home. Each year’s Guy Fawkes comes with its own unique theme, and 2016 will see a tribute to the late superstar and his music.

Firework Professionals is providing the pyrotechnics, all choreographed to a classic soundtrack – featuring a surprise lineup of Bowie’s hits – broadcast simultaneously over The Breeze 94.5FM.

“The Treetech Guy Fawkes Fireworks Spectacular is free, easily accessible and ideal for the whole family,” says Rich Attwood, Christchurch City Council’s Head of Events.

“Every grown-up will be familiar with every note of music, and it’s a great way to introduce the kids to the world of Bowie. It’s going to be the perfect blend of sound and vision.”

For those who don’t bring their own radios, a sound-system will be installed to provide perfect acoustics for 70 metres on either side of New Brighton Pier. Food trucks will be onsite from 5pm, and revellers are encouraged to arrive early and find a nice vantage point on the beach.

Crowds are asked to leave their own fireworks at home and to be mindful of New Brighton’s alcohol ban. To avoid congestion, there will be no access to Seaview Road (from Pages Road to Marine Parade) and Beresford Street.

Suggested driving routes are:

· If coming in from the north, use Marine Parade, Keyes Road or New Brighton Road.

· If coming in from the south, use Owles Terrace via Pages Road or Bridge Street.

There is parking available at Thompson Park (off Marine Parade) for a gold coin donation upon entry. On-street parking is permitted outside the road closures. Access for disabled parking in the South Ramp car park is via Pages Road.

Guy Fawkes is traditionally the busiest night of the year for the Council’s Animal Management Team, with fireworks often causing frightened dogs and cats to run and hide. Residents are advised to keep their pets contained safely in their home – ideally with some music playing to keep them relaxed.
