Warning on TPPA to voters

WARNING ON TPPA TO VOTERS

New Zealand First warned today that pro-TPPA politicians will revive the Trans Pacific deal if voted in next year.

“With both Clinton and Trump against it it’s dead in the water now, but elements here will give it mouth to mouth next year if they get the opportunity,” New Zealand First Leader and Northland MP Rt Hon Winston Peters told a public meeting at Kelston, West Auckland.

“Be under no illusion, there are those in Parliament, including National, who will sell you out for that deal if you give them a future chance to.

“They will condemn us to a treaty that has little trade benefit, lots of potentially harmful clauses, and probably more expensive medicines.

“The TPPA in its present form isn’t a good deal for New Zealand. Instead, it is a great deal for the government’s foreign corporate mates, who will have the right to challenge our laws.

“We are the only party that drafted and lodged a Bill in Parliament to try and deal with one of the worst aspects of the TPPA – the clause that allows foreign corporations to sue the government if they believe our laws harm their profits.

“National has kept the process and the negotiations cloaked in secrecy as they have pursued this deal – they will continue to do so if you allow them.”
