Mayor Welcomes Overhaul Of Building Act |
||
Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown has welcomed the government’s announcement that it will end the practice of joint and several liability, also known as ‘the last man standing’.
Under the current law, Auckland ratepayers must bear significant cost as the insurer of last resort, with uncapped financial liability in many building disputes.
Mayor Brown has been campaigning to fix this issue since he released his Manifesto for Auckland in 2023.
“I’m pleased that commonsense has prevailed in Wellington, and Cabinet is listening to me rather than the bureaucrats. This is a huge victory for Auckland ratepayers.
“I want to congratulate Chris Penk, the Minister for Building and Construction, on a job well done.
“I now eagerly await his decision on exempting Auckland from the absurd earthquake-strengthening rules.”
