The government has acknowledged this as a “stark reminder” of the need for secure and affordable gas, leading to policy shifts including overturning the 2018 ban on new offshore oil and gas exploration and exploring options for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) imports.

This dwindling domestic gas supply further underscores the precariousness of relying on fossil fuels. It highlights the critical need for New Zealand to accelerate its shift towards alternative, more secure energy sources like biomass.
