Haiti Quake survivor On Rescue Mission

Haiti earthquake survivor Emily Sanson-Rejouis of Nelson is asking New Zealanders to help save a school in the crippled country.
Emily, Nelson businessman Hans Baerselman and Versatile Buildings are working together to replace classrooms destroyed in the January quake at the Source of Hope School in Leogane.

Emily lost her husband Emmanuel and two of their three daughters, Kofie-Jade and Zenzie, in the disaster.Emanuel was born in Leogane, a village three hours drive from Port-au-Prince.

The Source of Hope School’s administrative director was a friend of Emmanuel’s and was in the family’s apartment when the quake struck. He spent 18 hours in the rubble before being dug out alive.

Since the disaster, the school has been using tents as classrooms however that will soon change…

Hans is buying a Versatile kitset building modified into classrooms and is paying for it to be shipped to Haiti and assembled in Leogane.
Versatile is providing the building at cost and the project is being carried out by the Kenbe La Foundation, which is being established by Emily in memory of Emmanuel, Kofie-Jade and Zenzie.

Kenbe la is Haitian Creole for never give up.

Along with the building there are plans to ship up to two containers of donated goods to help the school. Items being sought for these include:
* Basic first aid medical supplies
* Building equipment: spades, hammers, nails, saws, concrete and plastering trowels, wheelbarrows, ladders, ropes, tarpaulins
* Basic toiletries: soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste
* School supplies: school bags, pens, pencils, crayons, coloring pencils, reading and exercise books, chalk
* School chairs
* Sports equipment: balls for soccer, basketball and volleyball
* Summer clothes and sneakers
* Blankets and towels
