White House does disservice to memories of victims

The US administration is doing a disservice to the memories of the victims of 11th September by using the occasion to beat the drums for war against Iraq, Green Party Foreign Affairs spokesperson Keith Locke said today.

"It is a time to mourn the 2801 lives lost in the World Trade Centre and Pentagon tragedies and the more than 5000 lives lost since, in the US-led retaliation against Afghanistan," said Keith Locke.

"It is a time to honour the innocent dead. There is no honour in using this anniversary to target new victims."

Keith will participate in a commemoration ceremony at the US Embassy in Wellington at 11.30am today. He will accept two peace petitions on the steps of Parliament at 1pm and give a brief speech.
