Kake Tonu launch paves way to a safer city
Council is committed to creating a safer and more inviting city, and the launch of Kake Tonu Way on Tuesday is a key part of an ongoing campaign of working with communities to deliver safer, more inviting environments for locals and visitors to Wellington.
The walkway between The Terrace and Victoria University’s Boyd Wilson Field, will be officially launched as Kake Tonu Way – a name chosen by local students, meaning ever upwards.
This project is a collaboration between Council, Te Aro School, Victoria University of Wellington, Victoria University of Wellington Students Association, neighbours and the Police to enhance the safety of Kake Tonu Way, and create a positive identity and connection to the space.
A mural design by local artist Joe McMenamin, which was influenced by student’s input, is one component that adds to this goal – alongside a CCTV camera, increased maintenance of the walkway and foliage, plus regular foot patrols by Local Hosts, University security and the Police.
Mayor Justin Lester says the 2017 Residents Monitoring Survey shows Wellingtonians are feeling safer in their city and neighbourhoods – but there’s still room for improvement.
“We’ve been working hard with communities and stakeholders to identify what we need to do, and where, to make sure everyone can feel safe, and be safe, 24/7.
“Locals, walkers, schools and students had their say, and we listened, and now we are confident the upgrade and opening of Kake Tonu Way and surrounding area is now safer, more attractive and more inviting – increasing walkability in the Capital, supporting the local schools and community, and beautifying a key link between Kelburn and The Terrace.”
The Mayor will launch Kake Tonu Way tomorrow, and activities, including a basketball competition between the Police and local students, will follow official proceedings.
