Fricnic to host ‘world’s biggest uke-off’ attempt

Fricnic, the Fringe Festival’s picnic with a twist, will take a crack at the record books this week when it hosts an attempt for the world record ukulele sing-along this Saturday, February 17 in Wellington.

Fricnic, brought to you by Cadbury Picnic is a family-orientated event organised by Fringe 07, featuring an exceptionally good-looking line-up and activities for families under the sun at Frank Kitts Park on the Wellington Waterfront.

Performers include Dance Brasil, Bollywood Dancers, Spartacus R, Too Many She-Jays, plus MC Steve Wrigley. The Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra will play from midday.

“Fricnic is going to be super sweet this year,” said Fringe 07 director Karen Blyth. “We’re calling for everyone to bring along their ukuleles, enjoy the sun and then be part of a world record attempt for the World’s Biggest Uke-Off.

“We know there’s been more than 2000 ukuleles sold in Wellington over the past year, plus there’s thousands more in people’s homes all over the city, so Wellington is well-poised to lead the world in Ukulele greatness.”

Ms Blyth admitted that information on the world record is scarce, “but who cares? World records always start somewhere and Fricnic will be a great day and lots of fun for the kids with activities, face-painting and heaps of food.

“Just imagine, Frank Kitts Park in full ukulele harmony!”

Song chords can be downloaded from the Ukulele orchestra’s website www.ukulele.co.nz
