The performance installation exhibition SKULDUGGERY is an event that features in the Fringe Festival 07 Visual Arts programme, and takes place on the 16th and 17th of February, 6pm, at Thistle Hall, Cuba St.

SKULDUGGERY, curated by Auckland performance artist Cat Gwynne, features the works of 15 Wellington and Auckland based artists who work interactively in the areas of performance, sound, moving image, film, poetry and installation. For the exhibition, these artists have created works that share elements of humour, irony and abstractedness, yet in true post-modern style, have absolutely nothing to do with each other whatsoever.

SKULDUGGERY is a critical reflection on fringe festivals, commenting on the ‘expo-pavilion’ nature that they can have when they are viewed in their totality. “By taking a variety of works that are in no way thematically related to each other, and forcing them to try and breathe in the same space at the same time, I aim to create a maniacal, sampled world of surface impressions; a quick-fix of images that try to share and dazzle the same audience…much like the shows in a fringe festival programme” says Gwynne.

By using Thistle Hall site specifically, SKULDUGGERY gives an overall aesthetic that is charmingly low-fi and casual. By embracing the building’s open and encouraging environment, the exhibition manifests itself as some sort of local gala; each installation becoming quirky representations of members of a community.

SKULDUGGERY promises to offer its active spectators plenty of artistic absurdity, oodles of meaningless shenanigans, and maybe a free glass of wine.
