Masses of Free Music at Cuba St Carnival

Masses of Free Music at Cuba St Carnival

The 2009 Cuba St Carnival lives up to its reputation as NZ’s largest free music festival with more than ten music stages planned throughout Cuba St and Courtenay Place on Saturday 21st February. Over 80 bands and DJ’s will perform at the one-day event, with everything from Cuba St Main Stage acts The Tutts, The Ruby Suns and Dam Native to Caribbean-style steel bands and a huge range of Latin American music.

Artistic Director Chris Morley-Hall said, “With over 200 bands approaching us for 2009, it’s been a great opportunity to create a diverse and exciting programme.”

This year there will be a stage entirely devoted to Latin music at Havana Club Square, located in Courtenay Place, with mojito makers on hand.

Many of Wellington’s famous bars are coming out onto the street with great line-ups. Hope Bros will have Ladi6 and the infamous Turnaround (with Manuel Bundy, Cian and the Submariners). Coyote Bar has Mamaku Project and The Aviators, and The Establishment will have a special guest performance by comedian Adam Page and his fifteen musical instruments. Meanwhile in Cuba Mall, the Mighty Menagerie are planning some crazy antics, describing their area as “a country club of sorts – but a teeny bit twisted”.

Jonathan Crayford will finish off the night on the Cuba St Main stage with an all-star, mega line-up called “The Revolution is Live”, which includes Ricky Gooch (Trinity Roots) and Joe Lindsay (Fat Freddy’s) and many others in a stellar ensemble.
