Strong interest in Wellington festival

It seems Wellington just can’t get enough summer fairs.

The Mount Victoria Inner City Festival takes place on the last day of summer and the interest in the festival has delighted organisers.

Residents will be able to treat themselves to anything from a free-range bacon sandwich to an eco funeral at the Mount Victoria Inner City Festival.

The festival will be held in Roxburgh and Caroline Streets, which will be blocked off between 10am and 3pm on Saturday, February 27 so that the eco friendly fair can take place. Its theme this year will be combating global warming. Tidemarks related to potential sea level rises will be marked out on the New Crossways Community Centre.

There will be five hours of non-stop quality entertainment featuring Tessa Rain, Funky Junk and Linda Joy as well as various dance performance after Wellington’s Mayor, Kerry Prendergast, formally opens the festival at 10am. There will also be guided walks leaving from the festival.

Numerous stalls will offer organic foods, clean energy options, handmade crafts and second-hand clothes and books. Scattered amongst them will be ‘green areas” with seating and plants where parents can relax while the kids try out the bouncy castle, the several hot food stalls, or the lemonade and ginger beer stands.

The fair has been adopted by a group of clowns from Wellington’s Fringe Festival who will give regular street performances.

A series of workshops on inner city gardening and other eco themes will be held in the New Crossways Community Centre, as well as the screening of some short eco-documentaries.

A new feature will be a Speakers Corner, where orators from a wide range of activist groups will sound forth on what they think are the burning issues of the day. If you’ve something to get off your chest, here’s your chance.

The festival is being held to raise money for New Crossways, Mount Victoria’s new community centre.

If nature is unkind, the next day (Sunday 28 February) has been set aside as a rain day. All proceeds go to the community centre.
