Aoraki Polytechnic and Trades Training

Aoraki Polytechnic and Trades Training

Aoraki Polytechnic is on track, pending student numbers, to run a compressed trades course in general engineering to help with the rebuild of Christchurch with Competenz (New Zealand Engineering, Food and Manufacturing Industry Training Organisation) offering full support and NZQA giving their approval.
The BCITO (Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation) has decided nationally that they do not support compressed carpentry training so Aoraki Polytechnic has withdrawn their application to NZQA for approval because they see ITO support as critical.

Aoraki Polytechnic will have a full range of construction related programmes such as carpentry, brick, block and paving, and pre trades electrical, on offer in July and has commenced marketing these to prospective students.

These programmes will run at up to three campuses over the calendar year with students completing their qualifications by the end of April 2012.

“We plan to offer as many places as possible in our construction related programmes to upskill people and enable them to join the industry as productive participants in the reconstruction effort,” said Kay Nelson, Chief Executive.

Kay Nelson, Chief Executive, says, “We are delighted to be part of a co-ordinated and consolidated approach established to help rebuild Christchurch and will be working with people from organisations including CPIT, SIT, ITOs, TEC and NZQA to deliver innovative solutions.”
