Gravity and Other
Myths opened last night under the sails on Wellington's
Queens Wharf. A good crowd gathered to take in the skills of
some of the city's top 'new circus' performers.
The evening began with a live musical set that made more than a nod to sci-fi, followed by a haunting group aerial dance piece, and then, just on nightfall the main event commenced.
Starting with music based around remixed commentary on astronomy and space exploration, the performers in 'Gravity and Other myths' showed of a range of mostly aerial circus skills; swinging, climbing, twisting and suspending with the actual sky as their backdrop.
They show a lot of skill in a performance that had moments of beauty as well as spectacle, right up to a fiery finale that Scoop was unable to photograph due to the camera batteries being flat. If you want to know what it looks like, you'll just have to go along.
On performance days, there are also lunchtime workshops in circus skills at the site.
