Council Gets Tough on Clearway Parking Offenders

From Easter, Manukau City Council will begin towing away illegally parked vehicles from clearways in a campaign to get tough on clearway parking offenders.

Clearways operate only at peak traffic times and are designed to free up roads, allowing traffic to flow freely. Parking in clearways at peak times causes traffic congestion and safety problems.

“Clearways must be free of any obstruction so that there’s a smooth flow of peak hour traffic, says Environmental Health and Compliance Manager Kevin Jackson. When cars are left parked on these zones it can cause congestion, which is a hazard to motorists.”

Offenders previously incurred a $60 fine, however, Manukau City Council will now tow-away offending vehicles as well. Signs are plainly marked indicating their operating hours and additional tow-away signs have been erected. Towing the vehicle away will ensure that the clearway remains clear.

Initially when issuing a ticket, Manukau City Council parking wardens will give a warning notice regarding the tow-away policy, however, towing will commence after the Easter period.
