Bays Library programme in Afrikaans for children
East Coast Bays Library has introduced a programme in Afrikaans for children.
A weekly programme of stories and rhymes, this will be an interactive session for three to five year olds, designed to encourage them to use and hear the Afrikaans language and to develop a love of books and reading.
Ann Hill, East Coast Bays library manager, says staff member and expatriate South African Susan Kok is behind the initiative. A fluent speaker of the language and an experienced teacher, she has already received encouragement and feedback from Afrikaans-speaking members of the community and the library is expecting this programme to be very popular.
Latest Statistics NZ figures show that more than 3300 people from South Africa currently live in North Shore City, and in East Coast Bays, Afrikaans in the most common language to be spoken after English.
The
programme started at the end of April, and is held each
Wednesday at 10am.
