Youth Centre Extends Challenge To Local Youth

Pakuranga Youth Centre Extends Challenge To Local Youth

Term 3 at Pakuranga Youth Centre could be an extremely challenging one for youth with sports competitions, Have a Go days and the Young New Zealanders' Challenge (also known as the Duke of Edinburgh's Award). On 31st August the Centre will be holding a seminar for youth aged 14-24 years who are interested in participating in this positive and exciting challenge.

The seminar costs $20.00 and will be run by Andrew Woodhouse, Regional Support and Development Officer for the Young New Zealander's Challenge (Duke of Edinburgh Award). Some financial assistance may be available for this seminar.

Manukau City Council's Co-ordinator of the Pakuranga Youth Centre, Danny Lama says, "Council is pleased to encourage and promote the Challenge during its 40th anniversary year. The award challenges youth, and encourages friendships not only amongst those taking part, but also across the generations with the adults who give up time to share skills and help organise the programme.

"On a personal development level the award would be a positive addition to any young person's curriculum vitae as it shows employers that they have stickability, commitment and reliability", says Mr Lama.

Another exciting event the Centre has arranged this term is a visit to Awhitu horse whisperer Waitera Black. Limited to 9 participants the cost is $10.00. Meet at the Centre at 9.00am and return at 4.00pm.

A new netball competition will be running on Thursday evenings 6.30 - 10.00 pm, from 31 July. Teams are limited to six a side with a maximum of two males on court at any time. The entry fee is great value for money at $30.00 per team for registration and $3.00 per game.

10 - 17 year olds are invited to show off their latest dance moves at a Youth Dance on Friday 26th September, 6.00 pm to 9.00 pm. Tickets cost $3.00. Food and drink will be sold on the night. There will be spot prizes as well.
