Community House Calls For Volunteers

Community House Calls For Volunteers

The Highland Park Community House Management Committee will be holding their Annual General Meeting on August 27th. They are looking for volunteers for their Committee, in particular people with the necessary skills to fill the roles of Treasurer and Secretary.

Patrick Robertson, the Management Committee Chairperson says, "Joining the Committee is a great way for people to gain leadership skills in a non-profit community group. It's also a way in which to put something back into your local community.

"The role of Treasurer could prove useful to trainee accountants wishing to gain experience, and the Secretary role is a great way for people who are taking a break from the workforce to keep their administration skills up-to-date," says Patrick.

The Community House, which is supported by Manukau City Council, is a neighbourhood based space where the community can meet. It is also a place where programmes of events, activities and interest based courses are developed to not only meet the needs of the community but to reflect the community's values.

Over the last six months patronage of the Community House has increased with an average of 2,700 - 3,000 users each month. Programmes offered this year have included homework classes for English as Second Language students, a four week Treaty of Waitangi course and a programme for the over 60s living in the area - Safe Age and Driving, Step Ahead Falls Prevention and Age is Living. Groups currently working out of the House include; " South Auckland ESOL " Drop In Writers Club " Friendship Group " Kiwi Ora " Age Concern " A crèche " Barnardos (Parenting Children Course) " Inner City Women's Group.

All income generated from the Community House is used to run programmes or buy resources for the House.

If you are interested in this opportunity to participate in your community's social, educational and cultural wellbeing, please call Patrick Robertson on 534 8422 or come along to the AGM at 10.30am on August 27th.
