Community Day A Success For Rata Vine

The Rata Vine Community turned up in large numbers last Saturday to participate in their first Community Day. The aim was to enhance community unity and pride and there was a strong youth presence and involvement with the activities.

Held at the Felecia Reserve in Rata Vine, the crowd was treated to performances from the Rata Vine Girls dancers, Quik’n’Ezy Break Dancing Group, PASPA gospel singers and singer Wiremu Hohaia.

Other activities included a free sausage sizzle, pool, trampolines, bouncy castle, face painting, fun games and races, all to the accompaniment of the all-day Police DJ.

Event coordinator Angelique Otene, Project coordinator for Safer Manukau was thrilled with the event. “It was wonderful to see a great turnout by the youth of Rata Vine. Their involvement highlighted the need to provide regular community activities for the young people. At present the only activity available for them is a well used half court basketball area”, says Angelique..

Community organisations like Neighbourhood Support, Crime Watch Patrol, Rata Vine Community Project and Manurewa Maori Wardens were on hand to promote their services.

Erica August, Tenancy Manager for Housing New Zealand and a member of the Rata Vine Community Project was delighted with the event. “Everybody appeared to be having a good time and I am sure the day has encouraged new friendships and a sense of community spirit for many”, says Erica.
