ARC welcomes clarity on Eastern Corridor

The Auckland Regional Council (ARC) welcomes today’s announcement regarding the identification of a recommended option for the Eastern Transport Corridor project.

ARC Chair, Gwen Bull, says that the release of the recommended option report will bring some level of certainty both for the communities most affected by the project, and for the region as a whole.

“This is a major project that impacts a large number of Aucklanders,” she says. “Narrowing the work from the consideration of many options to a single recommended option is a big step forward and provides some greater certainty to people that may be affected.”

“There are many aspects of this project, such as the details of the project through Orakei Basin and Hobson Bay, that still need to be confirmed,” she says. “The ARC will continue to work with the project partners, and consultants to ensure that this project aligns with regional strategies.”

The size and impact of the Eastern Corridor make it important that the people of Auckland focus on it and what it could mean for the region in the long-term. The project has the potential to transform the eastern suburbs, provide significantly improved access between Auckland and Manukau, and provide stronger connections within the fast growing parts of Manukau City. It could also contribute significantly to enhanced economic performance.

In receiving the recommendation of the consultants today the project has now “come out” and the people of Auckland will be able to assess the costs, benefits and contribution of the project on its merits. This is an important step forward.
