Auckland City welcomes waterfront stadium preference

Auckland City Mayor Dick Hubbard today welcomed the announcement from central government on the preferred sites for a new stadium for Rugby World Cup 2011.

The news today to further investigate building a waterfront stadium is an opportunity for Auckland, says Mr Hubbard.

“There are good points to either a waterfront stadium or a redeveloped Eden Park. The government’s strong preference for the waterfront site aligns with our council’s view,” he says.

“However, this is a decision in principle only and there is still a great deal of work to do over the next two weeks to ensure that it is viable. This will include looking into the exact details of the location, funding options, and most importantly the wider design considerations.

“Auckland City Council will do all that it can to support the government’s investigations, to ensure the final decision is undoubtedly the best option for the city, the region and the nation,” says Mr Hubbard.

“I’m looking forward to working with the Auckland Regional Council over the next two weeks to reach a consensus on the preference, and working further with the government on important urban design issues.”

The Minister for Rugby World Cup, Trevor Mallard, made the announcement in central Auckland today, along with Mr Hubbard and Auckland Regional Council chairperson Mike Lee.
